The Forensic Unit of the Fayetteville Police Department is committed to providing the highest quality forensic services to the divisions of the Fayetteville Police Department and the citizens of Fayetteville. Crime Scene Unit (Forensic Technicians)

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit provides crime scene services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to all divisions within the department and consists of ten Forensic Technicians (civilian).  

The Forensic Technician provides services in complex felony investigations, including but not limited to, homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, aggravated assaults, home invasions, and property crimes.  The Forensic Technician’s responsibility is the recognition, documentation, collection, packaging, and preservation of evidence located at crime scenes.  The Forensic Technicians are responsible for providing courtroom testimony for all actions, observations, and findings when the cases go to trial.

Firearms Section (Firearms Examiners and NIBIN)

The Forensic Firearms Section is a vital component of the Fayetteville Police Department’s Forensic Unit. Staffed by one civilian Firearms Examiner and two civilian National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) Technicians, the section plays a critical role in supporting criminal investigations involving firearms.

Primary responsibilities include test-firing seized firearms and conducting forensic comparisons to determine whether bullets and cartridge cases were discharged from a specific weapon. The section also provides expert support in crime scene investigations, including trajectory analysis, fracture matching, and muzzle-to-target distance determinations.

The Firearms Examiner is a certified member of the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE), a leading professional organization that promotes scientific advancement, training, and ethical standards in the field of firearms and toolmark examination.

In addition to supporting internal investigations, the Fayetteville Police Department conducts NIBIN entries on behalf of multiple federal, state, and local agencies to aid in solving violent gun crimes.

Latent Print Examiners

The Latent Print Examination Section is responsible for the evaluation, comparison and identification of latent, patent and visible prints developed on crime scenes and crime scene evidence.

The evaluation, comparison and identification process involves a detailed side by side comparison of crime scene prints and known impressions utilizing a combination of manual or digital comparators and magnifiers. The process may also involve entering fingerprint evidence and searching automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) maintained in the Latent Print Examiner’s office. 

The Latent Print Office is also responsible for writing detailed reports on the findings of the comparisons as well as providing expert testimony in both state and federal courts.

Digital Forensics

The Fayetteville Police Department has its own Digital Forensics Lab for conducting complex digital examinations for criminal investigations. The examiners recover evidence from computers, cellular telephones and many other digital storage devices using forensically sound methodologies.  The examiners also are responsible for collecting digital surveillance evidence and enhancing images and video evidence.  These examiners are capable of providing expert testimony concerning data recovery and digital enhancements in criminal investigations.

The unit consists of two Forensic Digital Examiners (civilian) and two Cyber Crimes/Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Detectives (sworn).
