FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The city of Fayetteville will continue with the repurposing of the Historic Market House with the installation of LED lighting to illuminate the Market House. The new lighting will enhance the building’s aesthetics and allow the space to be illuminated with different colors for special community recognitions.
On April 15, 2021, City Council directed the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations team to move forward with repurposing the Historic Market House. Multiple city departments have developed a plan to preserve and revitalize the building and surrounding area which is expected to be completed by Fall 2026.
This project includes structure restoration, installing decorative LED lighting, improving ADA access and pedestrian safety and installing informational kiosks, displaying history of the Market House and other historic content.
In May, a historic preservation contractor began the first phase which included structure restoration that replaced deteriorated wood, roof supports and copper roofing, as well as refaced the clocks on the tower.
Another goal is to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility to the Market House. Part of the repurposing project will focus on improving safety and maintaining smooth traffic flow within the roundabout while modernizing pedestrian access with upgraded striping, signage, islands and crosswalks to create a safer, more accessible experience.
The last phase of the project includes interactive kiosks that will be installed with historical information about Fayetteville and the Market House. Upon completion with the upgrades to the space, the Market House will be a venue for historical information and multicultural exhibits and activities.
Road closures are expected and will be announced once finalized. These closures are expected while construction is taking place.
Residents are encouraged to be cautious when walking or driving near the Market House while under construction.
