Fire Inspection Information

The State Fire Code was implemented on July 1, 1991, and state legislation established a mandatory inspection schedule. The Fire Marshal's Office conducts fire inspections and enforces fire codes in all buildings, except for one- and two-family dwellings.

This schedule governs the frequency of inspections based on occupancy classification:

Once Every Year:
  • Hazardous
  • Institutional
  • High Rise
  • Assembly
  • Residential (except one and two-family dwellings and only interior common areas of dwelling units of multi-family occupancies)   
Once Every 2 Years:
  • Industrial and Educational (except public schools)
Once Every 3 Years:
  • Business
  • Mercantile
  • Storage
  • Churches
  • Synagogues

The Fire Marshal's Office conducts inspections for all new construction and existing commercial structures.

False Alarms Fines

False Alarms

Residential: No charge for the 1st and 2nd false alarm, $500.00 for each subsequent false alarm per calendar year.

Commercial: 1st $750, 2nd $1,000, any subsequent false alarms $1,500 per calendar year.
