Fayetteville Police Encourage Use of House Check Program; Offers Safety Tips Ahead of Holidays

(Fayetteville, NC) – As the holiday season reaches its peak and residents begin traveling and wrapping up holiday shopping, the Fayetteville Police Department is reminding the community to prioritize safety. The department encourages residents who will be traveling to sign up for its House Check program and advises all citizens to remain vigilant while shopping and driving during this busy week.
Residents planning to be away from their homes for the holidays can request a House Check to help secure their property. Through this program, patrol officers may conduct random checks of the residence while the homeowner is away.
Residents can submit a request online by visiting FayPD.com, navigating to Community Policing & Engagement, and selecting "Request a House/Party Check." This program may also be used by residents planning to have a house party and would like officers to conduct random checks on the residence during the party.
As peak shopping approaches, increased foot and vehicle traffic is anticipated around Cross Creek Mall and major shopping centers throughout the city. Officers have already increased patrols in these high-traffic areas. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit encourages shoppers to follow these tips:
  • Lock, Take, Hide: Always LOCK your vehicle, TAKE your keys and valuables with you, and HIDE shopping bags and gifts in the trunk or out of plain sight before reaching your next destination.
  • Park Smart: Park in well-lit areas.
  • Stay Alert: Avoid distractions from your phone while walking to and from your car. Have your vehicle keys in hand and ready.
  • Shop in Pairs: There is safety in numbers. If possible, shop with a friend or family member.
  • ATM Safety: Conduct ATM transactions during daylight hours and in well-lit, populated, areas. Have your card ready before approaching the machine, use your body to shield the keypad when entering your PIN, and never count cash in public. If you see someone loitering near the machine, find another location.
Traffic volume is expected to increase significantly this week. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit reminds drivers to follow these guidelines to ensure a safe holiday:
  • Pack Your Patience: Expect delays near shopping districts. Plan your route ahead of time and allow extra travel time.
  • Buckle Up: Ensure every passenger in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.
  • Drive Sober: Designate a sober driver, use the Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST), use a taxi, or use a ride-share service if you plan to consume alcohol.
  • Don’t Block Intersections: Do not enter an intersection unless you can clear it completely. Blocking the intersection causes gridlock and increases the risk of crashes.
  • Obey Speed Limits: Drive at or below posted speed limits, adjusting for traffic and weather conditions.
  • Maintain Your Distance: Keep at least a three-second following distance from the vehicle in front of you.
  • Move Over Law: North Carolina law requires drivers to change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles or public service vehicles with flashing blue, red, or amber lights. This includes police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, utility crews, and maintenance vehicles. If you cannot safely move over, you must slow down significantly, proceed with caution, and be prepared to stop.
Crime prevention is a shared responsibility. If you see something suspicious, say something. Report suspicious activity by calling 911.
