8 Cumberland County students awarded $1K scholarship

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Eight students from Cumberland County were awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship from the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations (FCHR) Commission to support their education at an accredited two- or four-year college or university. Each recipient received $1,000.  

 

Students were recognized on May 8 at the scholarship reception at the Dorothy D. Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center.

 

The scholarship award recipients include: 

 

  • Charlene Gutierrez, Gray’s Creek High School

  • Kayla Spell, Cross Creek Early College

  • Michael Rice Jr, Douglas Byrd High School

  • Morgan Powers, E.E Smith High School

  • Braelyn Maynor, Cumberland Polytechnic High School

  • Kayla Bannister, Reid Ross Classical

  • Zyann Saunders, Cumberland Polytechnic High School

  • Karmen Wiley, Cumberland International Early College

 

Since 1988, the commission has awarded 172 scholarships to graduating seniors in Cumberland County, including private and home school seniors.  

In order to qualify for the FCHR scholarship, students must have resided in Cumberland County at least one year, maintained an average of 2.5 GPA or better and have been admitted as a full-time student in an accredited two- or four-year college or university, and have a financial need. 

The scholarship requires students to write an essay on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s principles on non-violence and apply those principles to a current social or economic event in today’s society along with three letters of recommendation. 

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship fund was established by the Fayetteville Human Relations Commission in 1986.
