FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The City’s Public Services celebrated Engineers Week by recognizing the important role engineers play in building and maintaining the infrastructure our communities rely on every day. This week provided a meaningful opportunity to both celebrate the City’s Engineering and Infrastructure Division and connect with local students through hands-on learning and mentorship.

On Thursday, Feb. 26, City staff welcomed students from Westover High School to City Hall for the City’s third annual Engineer Week school visit, offering students an inside look at the world of engineering in local government.

Students participated in a series of interactive and educational activities designed to introduce them to real-world engineering careers and concepts.

During the “Meet an Engineer” session, students sat down with City employees to learn about their educational backgrounds, career paths and day-to-day responsibilities. The conversations provided insight into the diverse roles engineers play in serving the community and maintaining essential public services.

Students also took part in a hands-on rocket-building activity, where they designed, constructed and tested their own rockets. Through this experience, they saw firsthand how planning, teamwork, creativity and problem-solving all come together in engineering. The activity allowed students to use critical thinking skills while making complex concepts engaging and accessible.

In addition, students explored how engineers use mapping tools and technology to plan projects and make informed decisions that impact the entire community. “By giving students real exposure to the work our incredible team of engineers does each day, we hope they walk away understanding that their interests in STEM, creativity and problem-solving can grow into meaningful careers,” said Public Services Director Sheila Thomas-Ambat. “Our team is proud to share their experience and passion as they help build and shape Fayetteville’s future.”

Engineer Week celebrates the dedicated professionals who serve the City each day and inspires the next generation of leaders and engineers.
