The City of Fayetteville will terminate the local State of Emergency that was declared in response to impacts from the January 2026 winter storm. Mayor Mitch Colvin’s proclamation ends the State of Emergency within the City limits effective 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 30, 2026.

While conditions have improved, dangerously cold temperatures are expected to continue, and residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves, their families, pets, and property.

White Flag Shelters Remain Available for individuals in need of a warm, safe place during extreme cold. Residents seeking shelter information should follow Cumberland County updates for current locations and hours.

City officials encourage residents to:

  • Limit time outdoors and dress in layers when outside
  • Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have adequate warmth
  • Protect pipes by insulating exposed plumbing and allowing a small drip from faucets if needed
  • Use space heaters properly: keep at least 3 feet from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbors who may be vulnerable
