FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation (FCPR) has been awarded $20,000 from the North Carolina Amateur Sports (NCAS) Youth Sports Grant to purchase football safety equipment for youth participants enrolled in recreation football.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, football helmets should be replaced no later than 10 years from the date of manufacture and many will need to be replaced sooner depending on the wear and tear.
The awarded funds will be used to purchase approximately 150 helmets, ensuring that every participant will have the equipment needed to be as safe as possible while playing recreational football.
In 2024, FCPR’s youth football programs continued to make an impact, with a total of 988 participants across various offerings. This includes 42 enrollees in the Buddy Football program, designed for athletes with unique needs, 826 participants in traditional youth football, and 120 registrants in athletic football camps.
Through these programs, FCPR fosters growth, teamwork, and athletic development for young athletes throughout Fayetteville and Cumberland County.
Although football season is later in the year, FCPR spring sports registration is currently open until Saturday, March 1 for those interested. Participants can register and play at any recreation center. Participants can also register at FCPR.us.
Residents can learn more about FCPR programs, youth sports, and recreation centers at FCPR.us or call 910-433-1547.
