Mayor declares State of Emergency; City services impacted by storm

FAYETTEVILLE. N.C. - Mayor Mitch Colvin has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Fayetteville effective Friday, Jan. 23 at noon due to the potential impact of the winter storm forecasted to affect the Fayetteville area starting on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Residents should expect a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow over the weekend that will most likely create hazardous road conditions and with the potential damage to public and private property.

City services impacted by winter storm:

  • Fayetteville Area of System Transit (FAST) will suspend services, and the FAST Center will close Saturday Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. No services will be provided on Sunday, Jan. 24.
  • Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation (FCPR) has cancelled all basketball games for Saturday, Jan. 24. FCPR facilities will remain open for any previously scheduled rentals but otherwise will not operate. All facilities will be closed Sunday, Jan. 25. Facilities will delay morning openings to 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan 26.
  • An emergency shelter will open in Westover Recreation Center, 267 Bonanza Drive at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.
  • Passengers traveling through the Fayetteville Regional Airport should check with their airlines before arriving at the airport for the latest flight status information. They are encouraged to contact their airline directly for any questions on travel and/or flight schedules.

Residents are encouraged to stay inform and be prepared.

  • Monitor official information sources to stay up-to-date with weather information and conditions.

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads, if possible, and if not, be extra cautious while driving. Drivers should reduce their speed. Driving at posted speeds could be extremely dangerous when snow and ice are on the road. Many vehicles lose traction, especially at higher speeds, resulting in serious accidents and vehicle rollovers.

City officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust services as necessary.
