Solid Waste encourages a waste-free Valentine’s Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.– This Valentine’s Day, the City’s Solid Waste Division is encouraging residents to show love for both their loved ones and the environment by celebrating ways that reduce waste.  

From excess packaging to disposable decor, Valentine’s Day can generate unnecessary trash. With a few thoughtful choices, residents can enjoy a meaningful holiday while keeping waste out of the landfill. 

Tips for a Waste-Free Valentine’s Day

Give experiences instead of things 

Homemade meals, handwritten notes, local events, or shared activities create lasting memories without extra waste.  

Skip single-use packaging 

Avoid plastic wrapping, foil balloons, and glittery gift bags. Choose reusable gift bags, fabric wraps, or recycled paper instead. 

Choose recyclables or digital cards 

Digital cards create zero waste. If giving a physical card, select one made from recycled paper and avoid glitter or foil. 

Think beyond cut flowers 

Consider potted plants, locally grown flowers, or dried arrangements that last longer. Flowers can be composted when finished. 

Reduce food waste 

Plan meals carefully, store leftovers properly, and share homemade treats in reusable containers. 

Recycle right 

Cardboard boxes and paper packaging may be recyclable if they are clean and dry. Don’t put any tissue paper or cards with glitter or foil in the blue rollout cart. When in doubt, check local recycling guidelines. 

“Celebrating sustainably doesn’t mean giving up tradition – it means being mindful,” said Solid Waste Supervisor Luis Ortiz. “Small changes can make a big difference for Fayetteville.”
