FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The City of Fayetteville will begin construction work around the Market House on June 29 to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility as part of the ongoing Market House repurposing project.

This phase of the project focuses on creating a safer and more accessible experience for residents and visitors while maintaining traffic flow through the roundabout at the Market House.

The pedestrian safety and accessibility improvement phase includes:

  • Expanding the center plaza by approximately 2,950 square feet
  • Improving pedestrian facilities, pavement striping and crosswalks
  • Installing two pedestrian splitter islands and crosswalk connections to the Market House
  • Installing an ADA-accessible ramp from the Hay Street approach
  • Resurfacing the roadway surrounding the Market House
  • Installing new catch basin drainage structures to improve stormwater flow
  • Upgrading signage and pavement markings to enhance pedestrian visibility and safety

Morgan Trucking & General Construction, Inc. was awarded the construction contract in the amount of $648,519.20. Construction is expected to be completed in late fall 2026. Lane closures around the Market House are expected during construction. Additional road closures may be necessary.

Drivers should remain alert, use caution and reduce speed while going through the downtown area. While construction is underway, downtown businesses will remain open and accessible.

The pedestrian improvements are part of the larger Market House repurposing project. Previous phases included restoration of the historic structure and the installation of decorative lighting.

The final phase will include informational kiosks featuring the history of the Market House and Fayetteville.

Once complete, the Market House will serve as a destination for historical information and community activities.
